Adkins was born to a young single mother and was raised in various working-class London neighbourhoods. As a child, she enjoyed singing contemporary pop songs and also learning to play the guitar and the clarinet. It wasn't until her early teens, when she was introduced to the rhythm and blues vocalist Etta James and other mid-20th century performers, that she started to think about a career in music. Her music eventually caught the attention of recording labels and in 2006, about a year after her graduation, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
